Who is paying you to publish endless columns about how “wonderful” New College has become?

Mark your calendars for the Sarasota County Planning Commission Public Hearing on Nov. 21, 5 p.m., at the R.L. Anderson Administration Building in Venice, where arguments will be heard over whether to rezone farmland adjacent to the Celery Fields and Raymond Road boardwalk in Sarasota.
D.R. Horton wants to build 170 homes on the Smith Family farmland. The boardwalk is near a critical wildlife nesting area.
The county’s Comprehensive Plan does not allow approval of dense housing in a 100-year floodplain. The Smith farmland is a floodplain and was flooded after Tropical Storm Debby.
Email your county commissioners to oppose Rezone Petition RZ 23-30 or attend the hearing Nov. 21 to voice your opposition in the name of sound environmental stewardship. 
The Anderson Administration Building is at 4000 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice.

A comparison of the reaction by Democrats to the results of the 2024 presidential election and the reaction of the Republicans after the 2020 election is striking.
Rather than accepting this month that Republicans won on the issues − immigration, inflation, crime and foreign policy − Democrats accused those voting against their candidate of being racist or misogynistic.

They thought Black and Hispanic voters and women should have voted for Vice President Kamala Harris because she looked like them. If that is the case, should white voters support white candidates for the same reason?
Although Republicans were clearly upset in 2020 when then-President Donald Trump lost, their reason was completely different. They were upset with the process – all of the changes in voting that had been made under the guise of COVID, and that the election turned on a small number of votes in two large Democratic-controlled cities in two states.
They could accept that voters chose the other candidate.
Hopefully, this time Democrats will accept the results of the election and not try to undermine President Trump for the next four years as they did his first four. Wouldn’t that be refreshing?

After reading “Some immigrants fear ‘scary’ times ahead,” the USA Today article in the Herald-Tribune on Nov. 12, I believe it worth mentioning the famous quote of German theologian Martin Niemoller:
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist. 
“Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist.
“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
“Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out.”
Yes, there are scary times ahead.

The American people have made a choice. This is how our system works.
I don’t happen to agree with that choice. I find that choice incomprehensible.
A man of no character or integrity.
A man who is incapable of telling the truth.
A man who was found liable for sexual assault.
A man convicted of 34 felonies.
A man who should be in jail.
Be careful what you wish for!

My suggestion to the majority of voters who supported Amendment 4 is to use New York’s reproductive rights amendment as a model. 
New York focused on equal rights on all matters regarding reproductive health decisions of all men and women; the measure passed overwhelmingly in that state.

The abortion issue, along with contraception and family planning, is really about equal rights and religious freedom and, currently in this state, women do not have equal rights or freedom from the religious views of the minority.
Simply put, the government has no business in the personal decisions we make regarding reproductive matters.
My second suggestion is that the voters in this state, who are now ruled by the minority, pass a new amendment that requires a 55% majority on all citizen-produced amendment proposals.

I have a message for all you Republicans out there who are gloating about President-elect Donald Trump’s win.
The year 2024 is “virtually certain” to be the hottest year on record, and Trump intends to roll back climate initiatives.
If you think this is not going to affect you, think again. Climate change is occurring faster than predicted.
The evidence is everywhere.
